LOCAL SEO · GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE

A well-optimized Google Business Profile is not a profile where every field is filled with as many keywords as possible. It is a profile that describes a real business accurately and consistently.

A user should quickly understand what the company does, where it operates, when it is open, how to contact it, which services it offers, what the business looks like and what customers say about it. Google should receive the same information without contradictions.

The most useful order is: verification → business name → category → location/service area → contact details → opening hours → description → services → attributes → photos → reviews → website → measurement.

Quick Google Business Profile checklist

  • the profile is verified
  • the business name is the real-world name
  • the primary category describes the core activity
  • additional categories are genuinely relevant
  • the address or service area reflects the real business model
  • the phone number and website URL are current
  • regular and special hours are correct
  • the description is factual and useful
  • services and relevant attributes are complete
  • photos show the real business
  • reviews are monitored and answered
  • the profile is consistent with the website

1. Verify the Business Profile

Before optimizing details, make sure the company has been properly added or claimed and verified. Verification confirms the right to represent the business. The available method depends on the specific company. It is a security mechanism, not something worth trying to bypass.

2. How do you edit a Google Business Profile?

Profiles can be managed directly in Google Search and Google Maps when you are signed in to the account connected to the listing. Available fields can differ by device, category, region and interface, so the absence of a particular option does not always indicate an error.

3. Business name: use the real name, not keywords

The profile name should match the name used in the real world: on signage, the website, materials and documents and in the way customers know the company.

Correct: FreenetPro, if that is the actual brand name.

Incorrect: “FreenetPro Web Design SEO Gdańsk Gdynia Kwidzyn” if that wording is not the real company name.

Put service and location information in the fields designed for it: category, services, description, website and address/service area. Do not turn the brand name into a keyword list.

4. Choose the most accurate primary category

The primary category helps Google understand what the business mainly is. Choose the most specific available category that accurately represents the main activity. A category is not a keyword selected because it has the highest search volume.

5. Use additional categories selectively

Add extra categories only when they represent important additional areas of the business. Do not add one category for every product, minor service or possible SEO phrase. Category changes can sometimes trigger additional review or verification, so avoid changing them repeatedly without a business reason.

6. Use only a real business address

If customers visit the premises, the address and map pin should identify the correct place. Do not create a location only for SEO. Virtual addresses or locations without real customer service should not be used simply to gain visibility in another city.

7. When should a service-area business hide its address?

If a business travels to customers and does not serve them at its base, it should use the service-area model in accordance with Google’s rules. Typical examples include plumbers, electricians, cleaning companies and mobile services. A business that both receives customers and travels to them may qualify as a hybrid business when Google’s requirements are met.

8. Do not add the whole country to the service area “just in case”

The service area should reflect where the business actually works. Adding many cities does not move the company physically on the map and does not automatically create high rankings in every location. Proximity still matters in local results.

9. Keep the phone number current

The number should work, reach the company and be handled in a sensible way. A phone number is a direct conversion point. Do not keep an obsolete number only because Google has known it for years.

For one location, the home page or a relevant main landing page may be appropriate. For multiple branches, a page dedicated to the specific location can be better. If the listing represents a particular service, a relevant service landing page may be the strongest destination.

The key rule is consistency. If the profile shows one city and opening hours while the website shows another address and different hours, customers do not know which information to trust.

11. Set accurate regular hours

Use real opening or service hours, not the hours when someone might occasionally answer the phone. Do not mark a business as open 24/7 unless it genuinely provides service around the clock.

12. Maintain special hours

Update holidays, events and one-off changes. Accurate special hours directly affect the customer experience and reduce the chance that Google will warn users that hours may differ.

13. Add “more hours” only when relevant

Some categories allow additional hours for specific services such as pickup, delivery or brunch. Use these only where the feature is available and reflects a real part of the business.

14. What is the business description for?

The description should explain what the business does, what it offers, who it serves and what is genuinely useful to know about it. Keep it factual and helpful. Do not turn the field into a promotional banner full of discounts, prices and unrelated phrases.

15. A simple structure for a good description

  1. Who is the company?
  2. What are the main products or services?
  3. Who or which area does it serve?
  4. What real advantage or specialization is useful to mention?
  5. What short context about experience or the cooperation model helps the customer?

For example, FreenetPro can describe web development, ecommerce, SEO and website care in natural language, while keeping the description aligned with the actual category and profile settings.

16. Should you add keywords to the description?

Natural words that describe the business are normal. A web studio can mention websites, WordPress or SEO. What does not help is repeating lists such as “web design Gdańsk, web design Gdynia, web design Tczew…” purely for keyword density.

17. Complete the services the company actually sells

Where the Services section is available, add the most important real services. Suggested or custom services can be used where appropriate. Do not create dozens of near-identical variants just to repeat phrases.

18. Keep custom service names clean

A service name should be the name of the service, not an advert. Avoid phone numbers, private information, spammy phrases or decorative characters that make the listing harder to understand.

19. Use attributes only when they are true

Available attributes depend on the category and may cover accessibility, payments, amenities or other business characteristics. Do not claim parking, Wi-Fi, accessibility or other facilities if they are not actually available.

20. Use photos that represent the real business

Useful assets can include exterior and interior photos, the team, products, services and completed work. A logo helps recognition and a cover photo can support presentation, although Google does not guarantee that the selected cover will always be the main image.

Prioritize current, clear and realistic images. Stock photos should not pretend to show a location, team or completed project that is not real.

21. Photo specifications matter, but usefulness matters more

Google supports common formats such as JPG and PNG and provides technical limits for file size. Technical compliance is only the baseline. Sharpness, authenticity, framing and usefulness to the customer are more important than uploading the largest possible file.

22. Do not manipulate reviews

Ask real customers for genuine reviews and make the process easy with a direct link or QR code. Do not buy reviews, write them yourself, offer incentives for positive ratings or ask only for “five stars”.

23. Reply to reviews naturally

Responses show active customer service and give the company a chance to address problems. They should sound like a real business response, not a block of local SEO keywords.

24. Use product features only if they fit the business

Depending on category and region, Google may offer product or menu features. Names, prices, descriptions and images should match real products. Do not create fake “products” that are only keywords.

If the profile supports booking, reservation, ordering or appointment links, send users to the correct destination. “Book” should ideally lead to a booking form rather than through several unnecessary pages.

Use active official company profiles. A consistent presence across the website and other trusted sources helps keep business information coherent.

27. Do not change every important field at once without a reason

Major changes can trigger review or verification. Be particularly careful with the business name, category and address. Keep a simple change log with what changed, when and why.

28. Organize owner and manager access

Use the profile’s owner and manager roles rather than sharing one password. Periodically check who still has access, especially after team or agency changes.

29. Should the profile contain local keywords?

It should contain real local information. If a business operates in Gdańsk, that location can naturally appear in the address, service area, website and useful descriptions. Local SEO is not a competition to repeat the city name in every field.

30. Do you have to publish Google Business Profile posts?

Posts can be useful for updates, events and offers, but do not treat posting frequency as a proven simple ranking formula. Accurate data, real photos, relevant services and genuine reviews are more important than publishing empty updates every few days.

31. The Business Profile and website should work together

The profile is often the entry point; the website expands the answer. If the profile says “Web Development”, the landing page should explain who the service is for, scope, process, work and contact. A visible listing cannot compensate for a slow, confusing landing page without a clear CTA.

32. Check consistency between the profile and website

Compare business name, phone, address, hours, services and destination URL. The wording does not have to be identical, but the facts must not conflict.

33. Use LocalBusiness structured data only where it describes reality

On a real local business website, LocalBusiness schema can describe factual data such as name, address, phone and opening hours. Do not create fictional locations in structured data or add a separate LocalBusiness entity for every city landing page without a real location.

34. What should you check after optimization?

First verify that changes were accepted, the profile remains verified, categories and links are correct, opening hours are accurate and the phone works. Then monitor searches, views, website clicks, calls, directions, bookings where relevant, queries and real leads.

35. Run a small profile audit every month

  • Data: phone, hours, address and service area
  • Services: whether the offer changed
  • Media: current photos and work
  • Reviews: new reviews and responses
  • Links: website, booking and order URLs
  • Performance: changes in queries and interactions

From FreenetPro practice: optimize the information, not the field

Instead of asking “what should I put in the description to rank higher?”, ask “what information is missing for Google and the customer to understand this company correctly?”. The answer may be the category, a service, the service area, the website or the review process.

There is no single “SEO description” that repairs an incomplete or inconsistent profile. A strong Google Business Profile is the result of a strong, truthful business information model.

FAQ

How do you optimize a Google Business Profile?

Start with verification, the real business name, the best primary category, a correct address or service area, phone, website and opening hours. Then complete the description, services, attributes, photos and review process. Every field should reflect the real business.

Is Google Business Profile free?

Creating and managing a Business Profile for presence in Google Maps and Search is free. Advertising and third-party services are separate.

What should you put in the business name?

Use the real-world business name. Do not add unnecessary keywords, city names or descriptions only to influence visibility.

How do you choose the right category?

Choose the category that most accurately represents the main activity. Use additional categories only for important additional business areas.

Do more categories improve rankings?

There is no rule that more categories are better. Use the minimum set needed to describe the business correctly.

What should a Google business description include?

Explain what the company does, what it offers, who it serves and what useful context distinguishes it. Keep the description factual rather than promotional.

Should you complete the Services section?

Yes, when the feature is available and the services are real. Avoid duplicating the same service under many keyword variations.

Do photos matter?

Real, current photos help customers understand and trust the business. They are more informative than generic stock images pretending to show the company.

Can you add city keywords to the description?

You can naturally describe the real operating area, but repeating many cities as a keyword list is not a useful optimization method.

Does adding a city to the service area make you rank there?

No. Service area describes where you work; it does not move the business on the map. Local ranking still depends on factors including relevance, distance and prominence.

How often should the profile be updated?

Update it whenever hours, phone, address, services or operating model change, and review the profile at least monthly for accuracy, reviews, links and performance.

The most important rule

A Google Business Profile should not read like copy written for an algorithm. It should be the clearest, most current version of factual information about a real company. When the name, category, location, offer, hours, photos, reviews and website are consistent, the profile has a strong foundation for both customers and Local SEO.
