What Does an SEO Audit Cover?

See what a useful SEO audit checks: crawling, indexation, technical issues, content, keywords, internal links, performance, structured data and priorities.

A good SEO audit should not be a list of 150 warnings exported from a tool. It should answer four questions: what is limiting visibility, why it matters, what should be changed, and in what order the changes should be implemented.

That last question is especially important. A website may have hundreds of missing meta descriptions and, at the same time, a few important pages blocked with noindex, incorrect canonicals, a weak service architecture or missing content for the searches that matter most. Those problems do not have the same priority.

Short answer: what does a professional SEO audit cover?

The exact scope depends on the website, but a comprehensive audit usually covers business goals and existing traffic, Google Search Console, crawling and indexation, HTTP statuses, robots.txt and noindex, XML sitemaps, canonicals, URL structure, information architecture, internal linking, keywords and search intent, content quality and gaps, on-page SEO, Core Web Vitals and mobile, JavaScript when relevant, structured data, backlinks, competitors, Local SEO or ecommerce issues where applicable, analytics and conversions, migration risks and a prioritised implementation plan.

The final report should not stop at “327 issues found”. It should make clear which few issues matter most and what should happen first.

An SEO audit starts with the business, not with a crawler

Before running technical tools, it is worth understanding what the company sells, which markets and services matter most, which pages generate leads or sales, whether the business is local, whether a redesign is planned, whether seasonality matters and which areas are most competitive.

Example

A website may have 150 blog posts and six service pages, while most revenue comes from one service. If that service page targets the wrong intent, has weak content and receives almost no internal links, it can be more important than dozens of minor issues on old articles. Technical findings need business context.

1. Google Search Console

Search Console is one of the most important data sources because a crawler shows what exists on the site, while GSC also shows how Google has actually interacted with it over time.

  • rich-result reports when available

What are we looking for?

Pages with many impressions and weak CTR, queries close to the top 10, URLs losing visibility, two pages competing for the same intent, important URLs with no clicks, indexation problems and unusual drops after changes to the website.

2. Website crawl

A crawl helps inventory URLs and review HTTP status, indexability, canonical tags, titles, headings, meta robots, redirects, internal links, orphan-like problems, images, pagination and duplicate patterns.

A crawler is not an audit

A tool can report that 47 titles are too long. It cannot automatically decide whether those pages matter, whether they have traffic, whether they match the right intent or whether they should exist at all. The tool collects data; the audit interprets it.

3. HTTP statuses

Review 200 responses, 3xx redirects, 404/410 removals and 5xx server errors. Pay particular attention to internal links going through redirects, redirect chains or loops, important pages returning the wrong status, removed URLs with valuable links and soft 404s.

Not every 404 is an SEO error

If a page was intentionally removed and has no meaningful replacement, 404 or 410 may be correct. It becomes a problem when valuable links still point to the URL, a clear replacement exists, the page was removed accidentally or internal links still lead there.

4. robots.txt

Check that robots.txt does not block important resources or sections, does not contain old staging rules and points to the correct sitemap when that mechanism is used. Remember that blocking crawling is not the same as using noindex. If Google cannot crawl the URL, it may not be able to see a noindex directive on the page.

5. noindex and indexability

Look for noindex on pages that should rank, technical pages that are indexed accidentally, low-value tag/filter pages, publicly accessible development URLs and pages that require authentication.

A classic launch mistake

The entire development site receives noindex during production and nobody removes it after launch. Visually the site works; organic search does not. Indexability must be checked on production.

6. XML sitemap

A sitemap should primarily contain canonical, indexable, useful URLs that return the correct status. Check whether the sitemap works, contains the right URLs, excludes redirects and noindex pages, has been submitted to Search Console and whether GSC reports problems. A sitemap helps discovery; it does not repair weak architecture.

7. Canonical

Review self-canonicals, canonicals pointing to the wrong URL, redirects or 404s, parameter and filter variants, HTTP/HTTPS and www/non-www consistency. Canonical is a signal rather than an absolute command, so redirects, canonicals, sitemaps and internal links should all point in the same direction.

8. URL structure

URLs should reflect a logical, stable structure. Check unnecessary parameters, several versions of the same page, excessive depth and needless slug changes that created redirects.

Do not change good URLs simply to make them “more SEO”

If a URL already has traffic, rankings, links and the correct intent, changing it can create more risk than value.

9. Information architecture

Check whether important services have dedicated pages, whether one primary intent has one main URL, whether categories are logical, whether the offer is understandable, whether key pages are buried too deeply and whether knowledge content supports commercial pages rather than existing as a disconnected blog.

Cannibalisation

If several URLs target the same intent with almost identical content, Google may struggle to choose the preferred page. The audit should identify the main URL and define whether the others should be merged, redirected, differentiated or left alone.

10. Internal linking

Review orphan pages, important pages with too few internal links, broken links, anchor text, links from articles to services, breadcrumbs and contextual relationships. The goal is not to give every page 40 links; it is to connect the most important content logically.

11. Keywords and search intent

The question is not only whether a keyword appears in the H1. Check what the user wants, what type of results Google shows, whether the page matches that need, whether the correct URL is targeting it and whether the website is competing with itself.

Example

“What is an SEO audit?”, “SEO audit price” and “free online SEO audit” can look related but represent different needs. One commercial landing page should not be forced to satisfy all three in exactly the same way.

12. Content gap

Look for questions customers cannot answer on the site, services without dedicated pages, missing comparisons, missing pre-purchase content and topics that could strengthen topical authority. A useful gap analysis combines keyword research, SERPs, GSC data, the real offer and real customer questions.

13. Content quality

Assess whether content matches intent, is current, contains useful facts, avoids empty generalities, is easy to scan and gives a reason to choose this page over generic alternatives.

Content does not have to be long

A short page can be excellent if it completely answers a narrow intent. Length should follow the decision and information need, not an arbitrary word count.

14. Content decay

Identify pages that used to perform but are steadily losing impressions, clicks or positions. Sometimes updating an existing URL is more valuable than creating another article about the same subject.

15. Title and meta description

Review uniqueness, relevance to intent, truncation patterns, misleading titles and duplicated templates. Metadata matters, but it should not outrank indexation or architecture problems in the priority list.

16. Headings

Check whether the H1 clearly describes the page, whether H2/H3 create a readable information hierarchy and whether headings are used semantically rather than only for visual styling.

17. Images

Review image size, formats, loading behaviour, broken files and alt text where it has an accessibility purpose.

Alt text is not a keyword list

Alt text should describe the relevant image in context. Stuffing search phrases into every image is neither useful accessibility nor a meaningful SEO strategy.

18. Core Web Vitals

Review LCP, INP and CLS with real-user data where available, then diagnose the actual causes: heavy hero media, blocking scripts, fonts, layout shifts, third-party code or server response. The goal is a fast, stable experience, not a decorative score of 100.

19. Mobile

Test real journeys on small screens: menu, forms, product selection, checkout, contact actions and important content. Mobile problems often affect both conversion and how efficiently search systems can use the page.

20. JavaScript

When important content or links depend on JavaScript, verify what is available in rendered HTML and whether users and crawlers can access the essential information reliably.

21. Structured data

Check whether markup is valid, corresponds to visible content and uses the correct entity types. Structured data should describe the page; it should not invent reviews, ratings, offices or services that do not exist.

There is no separate technical shortcut that guarantees inclusion in AI answers. A useful audit can still check whether important facts are explicit, answers are easy to extract, entities are clearly described, sources and authors are transparent and key information is available in text rather than hidden only in graphics.

What should a GEO/AEO audit check?

  • clear direct answers to important questions
  • consistent company, service and person entities
  • facts that can be verified
  • descriptive headings and logical page structure
  • relevant structured data where appropriate
  • strong internal links between evidence, case studies and services

Review which pages earn links, whether valuable links point to removed URLs, whether the profile contains obvious spam patterns and where competitors receive legitimate mentions.

Which links support real authority, which links can be preserved during a migration, and where the business could earn mentions through genuine relationships, useful resources or case studies?

24. Competitors

Compare page architecture, content depth, SERP formats, authority and the topics competitors cover. The purpose is not to copy their site but to understand what users and search results already expect.

25. Local SEO

For local businesses, review Google Business Profile consistency, service areas, location pages, reviews, local internal linking, business details and whether local pages contain genuinely local value.

What should be avoided?

Fake offices, keyword-stuffed business names, purchased reviews and dozens of near-identical city pages.

26. Ecommerce

For ecommerce, add checks for category and product architecture, filters and parameters, faceted navigation, unavailable products, variants, pagination, product structured data and internal links between categories and products.

27. Log analysis — when does it make sense?

Server logs can be useful on large or complex sites when you need to see how crawlers actually spend crawl activity. It is not automatically necessary for every small business site.

28. Analytics and conversions

Check whether important actions are measured: forms, calls, bookings, purchases and other business conversions. Organic traffic without a connection to business outcomes is an incomplete picture.

Rankings without business impact are not the full result

A keyword can move upward while the wrong page ranks or qualified enquiries remain unchanged. SEO reporting should connect visibility with useful traffic and conversions where possible.

29. Tracking SEO itself

Define the baseline before implementation: current clicks, impressions, relevant queries, landing pages, conversions and technical state. This makes later comparisons meaningful.

30. Security and manual actions

Search Console should be checked for manual actions and security issues. Compromised pages, injected spam or hacked redirects can affect both users and visibility.

Polish, cleanup and minor issues that should not displace more important work.

33. Free online audit vs professional SEO audit

Automated tools are useful for finding patterns quickly, but they do not know your business priorities, search intent, conversion value or whether an unusual technical choice is actually intentional.

An automated tool does not know:

  • which service generates most revenue
  • which URL should own a search intent
  • whether a redesign is planned
  • which historical URLs carry valuable links
  • which issues are worth implementing first

34. Does a self-audit make sense?

Yes for basic checks: Search Console, indexability, broken links, titles, sitemap and obvious performance issues. For migrations, large ecommerce sites or complex visibility losses, an external review can reduce the risk of missing system-level problems.
